Mathematics Defined

Abacuses, fingers and toes, and calculators have been used for ages to compare apples to oranges and tabulate how many of each fruit Susie can purchase with $5.35. Numbers have been manipulated in graphs, charts, and exponential sequences for ages to determine quantities, dimensions, and statistics. Without mathematics farmers would not
know how much fertilizer to feed their crops, doctors would not know how much medicine to give their patients, and mothers would not know how to budget successfully for their household. So how do you teach your students to get results?

TED Ed Lessons
TED Ed Lessons is an excellent resource to help educators explain the reason we have to learn mathematics and to explain mathematical relationships. The website offers a series of videos presented by professionals on a variety of interdisciplinary subjects.
Content The website currently has three TED Ed videos for statistics and probability that link knowledge of mathematics to real life. The content of the videos ranges from a lecturer on the stage with a microphone to stop motion and cartoon animation so an educator, should they decide to share a clip with students, can customize their lesson to fit a target audience of learners.
Target Audience/Reader Arithmetic teachers will find TED Ed’s videos enjoyable and thought provoking while students from middle school and up will find the talks engaging and practical, and even sometimes comical.
Standards Georgia Standards for 8.SP Statistics and Probability are covered in these three videos using real world explanations to support the hypothetical.
Use for Professional Development TEDEd Lessons are a terrific resource of information for the educator who wishes to brush up on a topic, or to find a more practical explanation for their subject matter. Students who prefer visual literacy would find the videos engaging as well.

Flocabulary www.flocabulary.com
Flocabulary is a resource that uses educational hip hop music videos to illustrate interdisciplinary topics. When used as a math resource, teachers can pick up lyrical math tunes that will have them boppin’ to the beat of cool arithmetic facts. A subscription is required to see all videos, but some are free to the public.
Content The content of the two Statistics and Probability videos relies on colorful animation and subtitles to supplement the music lyrics. "Tell the Future" is a probability video that, like the rest of the videos on the website, is accompanied by links to “Quick Review,” “Interactive Lyrics,” “Fill in the Blanks,” a “Printable Exercise,” and a “Quiz.” It also has printable handouts, lesson plans and a teacher’s guide—a valuable lesson planning resource.
Target Audience/Reader Mathematics educators and students of all ages enjoy the thumping beat and repetitious refrains that aid the memorization of the message.
Standards Georgia Standards for 8.SP Statistics and Probability are covered in these two videos using real world support explanations of the concept.
